Dessert for your skin – Skinfood Black Sugar Honey Mask Washoff Review

I’ve planned to write about something else this week, but after trying the Skinfood Black Sugar Honey Mask, I had to share it with you immediately. I can’t wait to tell you all about this delightful, comforting, and affordable wash-off mask.

Skinfood Black Sugar Honey Mask has reminded me how much I loved Skinfood’s wash-off masks a few years back. They are cheap, full of goodness and fills the gap between a clay mask and a sheet mask.

Packaging

Skinfood Black Sugar Honey Mask Washoff comes in their signature plastic pot. The pot is portable, sturdy and spill-safe. The matte finish feels great in hand. I would take this with me for travelling.

It has a foil seal to protect it from spilling during transportation. Overall, it’s very simple and basic packaging, but non-flimsy and well-suited for its purpose.

Ingredients

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sucrose, Glycerin, Honey, Water, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Caramel, Lanolin, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Isohexadecane, Polysorbate 80, BHT, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Fragrance

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is an ester derived from Coconut Oil. It’s interesting the first ingredient is an emollient in this mask, which explains its highly moisturising property.

Sucrose is sugar. It’s visible throughout the mask.

Glycerin is another humectant.

Then you’ve got honey. Another surprise here that Skinfood has used Honey because so many honey-labelled skincare products only use “honey extract” instead of real honey.

Cetyl Ethylhexanoate is another emollient and PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate is another fatty acid derived from coconut oil.

That’s probably the main component of this mask and it explains its moisturising, slippery, but non-greasy texture.

Colour

It has a brown colour, very similar to your regular brown sugar.

Scent

It has a honey scent, not the natural honey, but the cosmetic honey scent that you normally get for honey-labelled sheet masks (eg. Paparecipe).

It has fragrance as its last ingredient, so it’s not a natural scent.

But I enjoy this scent, to be honest. It made me feel like I’m doing a spa treatment.

Texture

The base has a gel texture, that’s slightly tacky and slightly oily – a little bit like honey but not as dense or sticky. The mask is infused with sugar particles that are pretty coarse.

The consistency is quite thick that it doesn’t flow at all, so it wouldn’t drip or move during the masking experience. But at the same time it’s thin enough that you can spread a thin layer on the skin.

Application

When you first open the tub, make sure to swirl it a few times with a spatula to mix everything together. I found the honey was on the top and the sugar was stuck at the bottom when I first opened the packaging. Once mixed together, the consistency becomes thick.

I applied the mask to my face using my fingertips. I was being quite gentle when spreading the mask over my face, because I didn’t want any over-exfoliation.

After covering my entire face with the mask, it felt great. It’s like being covered with a blanket. My face felt protected, moisturised and slightly warm. It felt calming and relaxing.

The mask doesn’t become dry.

I washed it off after 30 minutes. The sugar melted quickly when in contact with warm water, so if you don’t need the exfoliation, you can just skip it. The mask rinsed off easily.

After rinsing off, my skin still felt very moisturised. It felt like there was a very thin layer of emollient left on the face, protecting the skin from moisture loss.

My whole bathroom was smelling of the honey scent. It felt like a spa.

Results

Moisturised, cleansed and radiant skin.

I love how moisturising this mask is. It’s not greasy, not too occlusive, but quite long lasting. It has made the skin soft and elastic.

The sugar particles exfoliate and cleanse the skin, making it feel clear and smooth.

The best part is the radiance. The generous glow on the cheeks that’s delivered by the cleansing and the moisturisation.

I’m extremely happy with the experience and the result of this mask.

It’s difficult to capture the difference when my skin is in such a good state. I’ll share it with you in my next post the single product that has improved my skin’s clarity and radiance.

Price

Skinfood Black Sugar Honey Mask Washoff retails for 8800 Won (~$11 AUD) for 100g of product. With weekly use, the tub would last easily for 3~4 months. I feel it’s a pretty good price. Though if it’s cheaper, I would slather it all over my body!

Verdict

Skinfood Black Sugar Honey Mask Washoff is a great wash-off mask that fits perfectly between a clay and a sheet mask. I loved how my skin felt both during and after the mask. If you’re looking for some exfoliation and long-lasting hydration, it’s a pleasant-to-use treat.
